City of Burbank Johnny Carson Park Improvement and Stream Restoration

Project Scope

CWE performed civil design services for park improvements and the restoration of the Old Tujunga Wash through the 17-acre Johnny Carson Park in the City of Burbank.

As an initial part of the planning process, CWE conducted full site surveying.  HEC-RAS hydraulic modeling was conducted to determine the strategic course of action.  The comprehensive design addressed the park’s evolving water requirements while also providing much needed improvements to landscaping and vegetation.

CWE’s bridge assessment helped provide a clearer course of action.  The restored stream design removed a concrete low-flow channel and constricting bridge abutments.  Rip-rap drop structures and riparian vegetation were added to provide scour protection.  The restored stream now provides improved flow velocities, riparian habitat, and aesthetic properties to the urban stream.

CWE generated the working plans, specifications, and estimates for the project.  This included site improvements like retaining walls, access road improvements, and site drainage.  For improved pedestrian interaction, new walking trails were added.  A drinking fountain was installed.  It had its own leach field and the necessary water lines needed to be added.  The project did an excellent job of restructuring the park utilities while also making it a considerably more friendly recreational area.
